Happy Mother’s Day!
On today, I would like to offer my sincerest appreciation to all of the women in this world who take on the responsibility and honor of holding the title of Mom.
On this Mother’s Day, I would like to take a moment to give a very, special thank you to my mom, I truly would not be who I am today if it wasn't for my mom. My mom is the one who chose to make the sacrifice in her personal life to become a mother. So very literally if it wasn't for her I would be who am today. I cannot say enough how fortunate and blessed I am in the lottery of life, to have won such a special woman to call my Mother. Ultimately, everything I say, everything I feel in my heart and my love of life and the lives others, comes from my Mom. My Mom set the example for how I would go through life, by teaching me to never judge anyone by what was on the outside. In thirty-five years I can say with 100% confidence I've never heard my mother say one racial epithet, or derogatory word about anyone based on their ethnicity or identity. Now, she's a big college football fan and I have heard her use profanity while watching football; so I know she posses the ability to curse. However, she has never done so with malice towards anyone. My Mom is a woman who grew up in the rural south at a time when segregation was legal and prejudice was the norm. However, my Mom is the type of woman who fell out of love with her church after she witnessed uproar by the congregation when two African American women came into the all white church for the first time. She told me, “I believed it when they told me "God loves all the children of the world." So when she saw how those women were treated she began to realize that her church was living a lie. She never fell out of love with God. Rather, she fell out of love with the belief in God's "Whiteness" and the culture she was growing up around. So from that day forward, even as a child, she quite going to the church and quite playing their stupid racist game.
It isn’t just my moral compass that I can thank my Mom for. She also taught me to fight for what is right and to never be afraid to face adversity. In fact, My Mom is the type of woman, who once had a man try to rob her as she was reading a book on her lunch break. This resulted in her pepper spraying the would-be robber and holding him until the police got there to arrest him.
To this very day, my Mom is still helping me be successful in life and I proudly say that I am very much a mama’s boy. It might have taken me thirty something years to realize it, and say it, but I owe everything I am in this world to my mom. So on this Mother’s Day, I want to say thank you! You've always been my biggest fan and I love you for being the best mother a son could ever ask for.
