For five years I was a K9-handler at my agency. Additionally, I have continued to raise, train or work around police service dogs for the last ten years. Ultimately, I learned a lot about people by working with dogs. I actually learned one of most important life lessons about people, from working with dogs. I learned that the loudest dog on the field, the one who is barking and growling the most, is the weakest dog on the field. The strongest dog is quiet and stoic. The strongest dog doesn’t need to make a bunch of noise to prove to you how tough they are. They are confident in how tough they are and therefore there is no need to bark and try to scare anyone away. See the weak dog doesn’t want confrontation, so he wants to scare you away, by actually trying to look like he wants to fight. The tough dog doesn’t make it seem like he is looking for a fight. Because the tough dog knows, no matter how tough they are, there is always another dog tougher. The tough dog knows that trying to look all big and bad, your bark might get you in a fight your bite can win. The tough dog is confident that if the weak dog takes his calm demeanor for weakness, the weak dog will regret it. So remember, the loudest one in the room is always the weakest one in the room. No matter who they are, your co-worker, boss, politician, or even a police officer. There is no honor, nor valor in being a loud bully. Because in the end, you are the weakest one in the room even if you won’t admit it.
